The global crisis that began in 1929 brought radical changes not only to the economy, but also to the fashion world. In contrast to the frivolous “golden twenties”, the fashion trends of the 30s became more practical and restrained, the formed feminine image completely replaced the boyish style.
Expediency, comfort and simplicity are the three rules that distinguished the fashion trends of the crisis years.
Long skirts became a fashion symbol in the 1930s, and plain dresses with white collars were also popular.
The liberated woman of the 20s was replaced by an imperious, strong and active woman of the 30s, who shouldered all the hardships of the crisis era. Therefore, it is the “triangle” that is considered to be the main figure in the style of the 30s. Wide shoulders became very popular, ruffles, shoulder pads, frills, wings on the sleeves were used to create them, and a variety of scarves and shawls visually enlarged the shoulders.
Despite the fact that the boyish style has lost its timeliness, ladies' streetwear has become more and more popular. Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard and Marlene Dietrich introduced the fashion for men's suits and at the same time feminine makeup.
Thanks to the widespread use of dances such as the tango and the foxtrot, long, tight-fitting dresses with huge cutouts on the back came into fashion. Cocktail dresses were emphatically seductive - a perfect match for the gangster style of the 30s. The bet was made on the female figure: in clothes they tried to highlight the waist, chest and hips. The ideal is a woman with long legs and a slender figure.
Silk, woolen and cotton fabrics, which were embroidered with sequins and rhinestones, decorated with feathers and furs, were especially popular when creating clothing models.
In the 1930s, "glamor" came into fashion, which was the style of movie stars. Shiny materials, luxury and chic became popular.
Due to the crisis, girls and women could not afford jewelry, so the fashion for various costume jewelry spread. Accessories also played an important role. A variety of handbags, boas, gloves, light capes, bows around the neck complemented any look. A wide variety of hats came into fashion - both tiny and with huge fields. Thanks to such accessories, girls could add zest and update an existing image a little.
The main shoes in the era of the Great Depression were closed two-tone shoes with a strap and a rounded toe with low heels. They completed the feminine and restrained image of the girl.
The most popular pattern of the thirties was check and stripes, creating simple shapes that completed the image of understated and calm elegance. Dresses with a small floral pattern and polka dots are an indispensable element of the wardrobe of an elegant and delicate woman.
With the change in fashion for clothes, hairstyles have also changed. Elegant curls of shiny hair have replaced short rowdy haircuts of the 20s, which fell out of fashion.
Makeup has also changed. Make-up accents - both eyes and lips. Eyebrows were plucked into a thin thread and lined with a pencil, they tried to make the skin pale and matte, the eyes were painted with dark shadows, and the lips were certainly painted scarlet. A fly on the cheek or above the lip is a mandatory attribute of such a make-up. Modern diva Dita Von Teese does her makeup in the manner of the 30s.
